Cancún Airport runs 24/7 — flights land at every hour. What changes after dark is your transport options and how your check-in works at the other end.
Transport timing: - ADO bus to Playa: roughly every hour 8am to ~11pm. The last bus typically leaves around 11:30pm; check ado.com.mx the week of travel for current schedule. - Private transfer: 24/7 if pre-booked. Driver is already at the airport when you land, waits at the exit with a sign, doesn't care if you cleared customs 90 minutes after schedule. - Official airport taxi: 24/7 from the official desk inside the terminal. Yellow taxis; rates are fixed by destination zone. - Uber/InDriver: does not operate at Cancún Airport. Don't plan around it.
The actual problem with late arrivals isn't getting to Playa — it's check-in. Most short-term rentals have keyless lock codes you can use at any hour, but if your host hasn't sent the code, your "11:30pm arrival" becomes "2am still standing outside texting frantically." A few rules that prevent this:
- Confirm late check-in 48 hours before flying. Send your host: flight number, scheduled landing time, expected arrival at the rental, contact phone in case of trouble.
- Get the code or key handoff plan in writing the morning of travel. Don't accept "we'll send it when you land" — your phone may not have signal until you're past customs.
- Eat at the airport. Restaurants in Playa close earlier than you think — 10pm in most neighborhoods, 11pm on 5th Avenue. Arriving hungry at midnight is a real problem.
- If you're booking a hotel: confirm 24-hour reception. Some smaller boutique places have a front desk that closes; you don't want to find out at 2am.
Worst-case scenario backup: there are clean, basic hotels within walking distance of Playa's ADO terminal that take walk-ins 24/7 (Hotel Bahia Maya, Hotel Real Playa del Carmen, several others) for ~$40–60 USD. Worth knowing they exist so a late-arrival mishap doesn't ruin night one.
